Honey which is also called as “MADHU” has been described as nature’s most wonderful gift for humans in ayurveda. It has different effects on all the Doshas as it aggravates Vata, scrapes Kapha and normalizes raktapitta.

In natural form honey contains sugar like fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, lactose, disaccharides & trisaccharides. Honey has also got contents like vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, water & volatile aromatic substances.

Honey a sweet natural product has high nutritional and medicinal values. Eight types of honey have been described in Ayurveda amongst which “Makshika” has been considered best and with immense medicinal properties. It is collected by small honey bees and is very light and dry natured and is considered most useful in Ayurveda.

Therapeutic Uses of Honey in Ayurveda:

  • Acts as an instant energizer as it contain sugars, which are quickly absorbed by our digestive system.
  • Honey strengthens White blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.
  • Being hygroscopic it speeds growth of healing tissues and speeds up healing.

Beauty Tips:

  • Massage the face and body with honey to enhance the beauty.
  • Mix honey, lemon, gram flour and water together and apply as a face pack to be attractive and beautiful
  • Honey penetrates deep into tissues and when used with other Ayurvedic formulations, enhances the medicinal qualities of those preparations.

Precautions before using Honey:

  • Don’t mix honey with hot and spicy foods, should not be heated, and should not be consumed in hot weather.
  • Honey should never be mixed with ghee, mustard and fermented beverages like whiskey, rum etc as it enhances poisonous properties and imbalances doshas
  • Fish, honey and milk consumed together can cause vitiligo.
  • Honey should not be mixed with radish and meat.
  • Packed honey in shops is not as useful as the Ayurvedic honey and could be consumed with milk and fruit juices.

To lead a healthy long life 1 teaspoon of honey should be consumed daily.
